Background The Internet Industry Association is the national, non-profit, industry organisation representing internet businesses in Australia. Our members include most of the major internet players here and many of the smaller ones. Much of the work we do as an association involves developing best practice solutions for businesses, so that Australians of all ages can enjoy greater confidence in being online. As part of our mission, we are committed to assisting intenet users better manage the problem of viruses which threaten to undermine the utility of email itself. In the wake of the most recent outbreak, MyDoom, the IIA has become aware that up to one in four Australians have no current antivirus protection installed, with many having none at all.
These unprotected users are not only a threat to themselves, but also to other internet users everywhere, because their infection becomes the start of a new chain of attack throughout the internet community.
Add to this the fact that malicious code often contains backdoor (Trojan) techologies that enable unauthorised access to their information, and the decision to protect should be self evident. Yahoo! Australia & NZ Mail - Free Virus Scanning Yahoo! Mail is a web-based email system. Your email messages, address book and other account information are stored on our servers, rather than on your computer. Because of this, simply viewing your Yahoo! Mail email messages does not make your computer vulnerable to computer viruses. Email messages themselves can't contain viruses. However, files that are attached to messages can contain viruses. Yahoo! Mail provides free scanning of attachments to all users who get incoming email through Yahoo! Mail. When you receive a message with an attachment, click on the "Scan and Download Attachment" link. This will automatically check the attachment for any known viruses. If none are found, you can download the file. If a virus is found you will be notified and should make the decision not to download the file. Yahoo! Mail also offers free Spamguard, and a provides e-mail users the ability to block html graphics from being downloaded automatically when a message is opened. This optional "block html graphics" feature protects users from viewing images they may not want to see. This feature also protects users from web beacons, which are invisible tags within an e-mail that trigger an alert back to the spammer that the e-mail has been opened and the address is "live." Furthermore, people have the control to block up to 100 addresses and set up 15 filters to customise protection against spam. www.yahoo.com.au supports this IIA initiative and invites you to trial Yahoo! Australia & NZ Mail today. Visit (http://mail.yahoo.com.au) for your free trial. Help: http://help.yahoo.com.au
