Why has the IIA developed this Code?

In 1998 we wrote to the Prime Minister seeking a reversal on the government's then opposition to legislating privacy controls on private sector use of personal information. | view copy of letter |  We believed then, as we still believe, that the the demand for internet commerce and services is being held back by fears about the misuse of personal information.

This Code is intended to position Australian businesses who deal with personal information, particularly (but not only) over the Internet, as trusted people to deal with. The enforceability through the co-regulatory regime is a world first in online privacy protection. We are therefore hoping to provide Australian businesses who subscribe to our Code with a global competitive advantage.
