The IIA welcomes the announcement by Minister for Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy, Senator Stephen Conroy of important reforms to existing telecommunications regulations in the interests of Australian consumers and businesses. “The IIA has long called for this move,” IIA’s chairman Chris Hancock said. “Last year we urged that nothing less than an open and competitive National Broadband Network (NBN) should be our goal and we regard the Minister’s announcement as an important advance.” The clear lesson from the past eleven years is that the negotiate/arbitrate access regime has struggled to enhance competition and open access, he said. “The IIA regards the NBN as the future of the internet. As an essential facility it will underpin much of our social, economic and cultural development in the 21st century. It is therefore crucial we avoid repeating the mistakes of the past if we are to keep up with the rest of the world.” About the IIAThe Internet Industry Association (www.iia.net.au) represents the main net providers, content creators and associated services. It issues policy guidance to government and advocacy on business and regulatory issues, to promote laws and initiatives that enhance access, equity, reliability and growth of the Net within Australia. |
